The inaugural Vikings Crace Nocturne Criterium held last Saturday featured plenty of thrills for spectators and cyclists as riders raced to beat the clock and make it over the finish line.

Sponsored by the Crace Joint Venture, the event was open to all ages—from juniors to riders over the age of 60—and included a barbecue, hot drinks and prizes.

Cyclists from all over Canberra joined in the race, including plenty of Crace residents, and competed on a fully closed circuit encompassing Narden, Van Dyke, Ultimo and Stowport streets. “It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to race the roads under lights and before any residents moved into the course area,” says Crace project director Malcolm Leslie. “It was a beautiful clear night and everyone—from the youngest to oldest competitors—had a great time.”

After the event, competitors met at the Crace Sales and Information Centre for a barbecue and to compare race tactics. “It’s a really supportive, friendly environment and just loads of fun,” Malcolm says. “We intend to hold more of these types of events in the future and to continue building our links with local sporting organisations.”

"Vikings Cycling Club is very appreciative of the support that was offered by Crace Joint Venture," says Race Director, Steven Callahan. "The participants were excited to compete on a unique racing circuit at Crace.  The racing was fast and aggressive, and was entertaining to watch."
